Close Reading is a central focus of the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). It requires students to get truly involved with the text they are reading. The purpose is to teach them to notice features and language used by the author. Using lyrics is a relatively new idea I have been using with my class that sprang from my students’ (and my own) love of music. Kids respond to music; they get it! This information is meant to be used as a guide. Obviously, things may work differently with your kids, and you may have to adjust question levels and complexity to meet their individual needs.
